another aerial piece

cloud/sky/mountain lake. This piece is 24" x 24". The incised lines were done with oil pastel - rest is encaustic over a much modified digital image. It took several months and changed enormously over time.

interactive Antarctica atlas

I was very excited to discover these two new sites - the Landsat Image Mosaic of Antarctica and the companion site - Faces of Antarctica. Both let one explore images and information with far more ease than anything previously out there, especially for lay people. I know I'm going to be using them a lot!

Meanwhile, here's an encaustic piece – "flow", 8" x 8"

So I've started a new series of pieces - shrines/reliquaries and altarpieces about chunks of the environment impacted by climate change. Those who know me are aware of my Antarctica obsession. So this series has started with satellite or astronaut photos (copyright free, natch) images of Antarctica. Like most of my current work, these images are altered in Photoshop and then printed archivally and combined with encaustic. Difference here is that they are combined in a box or portfolio to make 3-dimensional objects - shrines or what-have-you.

First one is on the portion of the Ross Ice Shelf that broke off last year. Started with images from space of calved off bit and did relief painting/sculpture which lives in a little casket.
